Marc Laitin
AFL-CIO Online Mobilization Coordinator
Dear Marc,
Unions consistently supported energy, growth and job creation. Why have you abandoned us?
The emerging countries are building nuclear power plants and growing. We can't compete using wind and solar power. Your leaders knew that:
Nov. 7, 2007 -- John Sweeney -- President, AFL-CIO
"To achieve a balanced energy policy and promote investments in technologies and reduce greenhouse emissions, we believe Congress should make loan guarantees to the construction of nuclear power plants."

March 16, 2005 -- Official Statement of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa
For the past four years the Teamsters Union has been a part of a growing grassroots and lobbying effort to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas development.
August 11, 2001 -- James P. Hoffa -- President -- Teamsters-
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Labor leaders will try to "turn people around" -- specifically, key Senate Democrats -- to push forward President George W. Bush's controversial plan to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Teamsters President James P. Hoffa said Saturday.
We need growth and we need jobs. Please help. Together we can do it!

GM To Import China-Built Cars To U.S.
SHANGHAI (AP) -- General Motors Corp. plans to begin exports of vehicles made in China to the United States within two years, ramping up sales to more than 50,000 by 2014, reports said Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for GM in China did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports, which were said to be based on a company recovery plan given to U.S. lawmakers.
GM intends to sell 17,335 made-in-China passenger cars in the U.S. market by 2011, the Shanghai Securities News and other reports said. By 2014 exports would triple to more than 51,000, it said.

US generator AmerenUE has announced it is suspending its efforts to build a new nuclear power plant at Callaway in Missouri, saying that state policies are making it too difficult to finance the project.
the current version of the bill being debated in the Senate strips the legislation of the very provisions we needed most to move forward. As a result, AmerenUE is suspending its efforts to build a nuclear power plant in Missouri," said AmerenUE president and CEO Thomas Voss.

Coal - The End of an Industry?
"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them..."

John J. Sweeney, President, AFL-CIO
Remarks to the Democratic National Convention:
"Barack Obama has made a commitment to us, and more importantly to you, to help improve our economy, give workers a free choice to join a union and ensure that everyone has the quality health care they deserve."
trascript
Mr. Sweeny,
To improve our economy and create jobs we need affordable energy.
The three Mile Island accident, the Iranian revolution and oil crisis all happened in 1979. In the next five years, unions lost 23.28% of their members!
Since then politicians virtually killed nuclear power and American oil.
Wind and solar cannot power our planes, factories or even office buildings. Please tell Mr. Obama that we need nuclear power and domestic oil to power the economy.
July 24, 2008
Jim Hoffa:
"We are not going to drill our way out of the energy problems we are facing-not here and not in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," Hoffa told labor and environmental activists at an Oakland, Calif., summit on good jobs and clean air. "We must find a long-term approach that breaks our dependence on foreign oil by investing in the development of alternate energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal power."

Energy and Union membership
1948 to 2011
Energy and growth.
One of the first lessons you learn running businesses is that there is no status quo. You are either growing or going down and under. You cannot possibly maintain the same position. Constantly increasing taxes and expenses compounded by regulations and fees will soon pull you under.
Businesses need energy to grow. Conservation is good. We believe in it and practice it. But conservation barely covers rising production costs. It does not allow businesses to grow, raise wages, employ a constantly growing labor force and provide benefits for the increasing number of retirees.
Without growing businesses there can be no growth in the economy. The same politicians who have stymied growth are now saying that the economy is no good, unemployment is going to rise and we have to raise taxes to help the people who are hurt by the economy.
Politicians not only said it would happen, they made it happen!
We need more energy, lower taxes, less regulation and more jobs.
Energy and Industry
The Industrial Revolution spawned industry, jobs, unions and pollution.
Industrialization particularly in the textile industry began in the early 1770's with newly invented equipment fueled by waterpower.
About the same time, in 1769 James Watt invented the modern steam engine. Within ten years he perfected a factory version and steam power became popular especially in areas without waterpower. The fuel of choice for steam was coal although wood was also used and later oil.
The invention of the steam locomotive in 1804 completed the setting for the growth to come.
